"Five easy, elegant ways to tie a silk twilly — at the neck, on a bag handle, in your hair, around the wrist and as a soft tie. The guide from a Como silk atelier."
The twilly is the most versatile strip of silk in a wardrobe: about five centimetres by one metre of pure silk, a couture detail that turns any look into a gesture. From people who work silk every day in the district of Como, here are the five ways we recommend — simple, always elegant.
1. At the neck, the slip knot
The classic and the fastest. Fold the twilly into a narrow ribbon along its length, drape it behind the neck with both ends in front, cross once and let the ends slide under the collar. Adjust the height with a gentle pull: real silk holds the knot, then drapes on its own.
2. On a bag handle
The detail that lifts any bag. Wrap the twilly around the handle from the top, in even overlapping turns, and finish with a small flat bow near the base. A pure-silk twilly won't slip or fray: the hand-rolled hem keeps every turn in place all day.
3. In your hair
The Riviera touch. Gather your hair in a low ponytail, wrap the twilly twice around the elastic and finish with a simple knot, letting the ends fall. It works tied around a braid or as a soft band across the forehead too.
4. Around the wrist
Fold the twilly into a thin ribbon, wind it two or three times around the wrist and close with a flat knot on the back of the hand. Silk warms instantly against the skin — one of the tests for telling the real thing.
